Can you feed the hungry snek and avoid corruption?

smol snek is a small snake game for the Atari 8bit computers. Your playing style affects the chance for snek to get corrupted by food.

Earn bonus score by picking up food guaranteed to not corrupt snek. Corruption can spawn bad food, grow snek, make the play field shake or melt in with the background.

Avoid corruption long enough to unlock the secret level!

The game has been tested on a PAL Atari 600XL expanded to 64K, and an PAL Atari 130XE. The game should work fine on NTSC machines, and the snek speed is adapted to be the same on both variants to make high score table fair.

Versions

With this release, there are two different .atr disk image files for different use-cases, and an .xex version. The .xex version does not save any scores to disk. All versions are fully playable in emulators.

smolsnek-disk-version.atr is preferred when writing the disk image to real disk.

smolsnek-fn-version.atr is for hosting the image on a TNFS server, with high score support.

The disk version of smol snek only reads from the disk once, at startup, and then only access the disk to write new high scores.

#FujiNet version

The #FujiNet version does not require a #FujiNet device, all it does is read back high scores from the disk image before displaying or adding to the scores. This allows realtime update of the high scores when people are playing the game at the same time, as well as minimizing the chance of overwriting scores from others.

I had to add some extra reads from disk to work around the sector caching in the #FujiNet firmware, so there is a bit of seeking and unnecessary loading of sectors in this version. Note that this feature assumes that the TNFS server allows writing to disk images mounted read-only by other users. I'm not aware of any server that doesn't, but some TNFS servers might work differently.

This game is for the Atari 8 bit line of computers, and is best played on real hardware. If you have a real Atari, I assume you already know how to run software.

Emulators

To run this game on a modern machine you need to use an emulator. Most emulators can open .atr disk images and .xex.
